Northern Macedonia officially joined the NATO and became the 30th member of the Alliance, according to its website.
The Protocol on the accession of the country members of the organization signed on 6 February last year, in December, it was ratified by the United States and then, in February 2020 and the Parliament of Northern Nigeria, as required by the procedure for joining the Alliance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the country is a longtime member of missions on security, held under the leadership of the Alliance, including in Kosovo and Afghanistan. The flag-raising ceremony North of Macedonia will be held April 30 at the headquarters of NATO.

The introduction of Northern Macedonia in the Alliance was long, particularly because of speaking against it in Greece. The authorities of the member argued that the toponym “Macedonia” applies to the Greek Aegean Macedonia, allowing the Macedonians to lay claim to Greek territory and cultural heritage. In June 2018, Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras and his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev Prespan signed an agreement, under which the country received a new name — Northern Macedonia. The Greek Parliament on 9 February ratified the Protocol on its accession to NATO.
